Description of the job
A vacancy for an Agronomic Products Design Engineer (m/f) has arisen within Airbus Defence & Space in Toulouse. You will join the Thematic Services department.
Airbus DS GEO SA successfully produces and delivers since 2002, and in partnership with the Arvalis Plant Institute, the Farmstar advice service for the harvest of wheat, barley, and rapeseed crops in France.
Airbus DS GEO SA has a strong will to develop the export of agricultural services by enhancing the experience of the Farmstar service and European projects.
The already on-going projects and the prospected ones will cover a large range of services for agriculture: assistance service for the crop harvest in plots (Farmstar type), agricultural inventory on large surfaces, status of the development of large-scale crops
Farmstar and export projects use the know-how and the tools of Airbus DS GEO SA, more particularly the OVERLAND™ software, which generates biophysical parameter maps and produces land-use maps.
Farmstar agricultural products (e.g.: overall dose of nitrogen that the plot needs, risk level of pour in to the plot) are validated by the agronomical experts of our technical institute partners (Arvalis, CETIOM) before being transmitted to farming cooperative and farmers who are customers of this service.
Within Projects and Services Application Management, and in the framework of the production and development of our application projects and services, your role will be to coordinate the thematic production activity dedicated to agriculture and you will work under the functional responsibility of a project manager.
Tasks & accountabilities
Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • For development engineering and testing of agricultural operational services for export, under the responsibility of the export services for agriculture project manager:
  • Carrying out bibliographic and thematic (agriculture) researches on our prospects, analysing images databases, analysing SIG
    ü Preparing product prototypes (biophysical product cards on various crops, land-use maps) using our internal tools
    – Contributing to the preparation of technical documents or proposals
    –      Creating services in export pilot projects
  • Carrying out the first level of validation of products (analysis of statistic value probability) before transmission of the products to institutes for complete validation
  • Providing corrections for products (modification of parameter tables) in function of institute requests and after discussing it with them
  • Collecting and analysing new needs expressed by commercial teams or directly by customers on the agricultural market and risks management
  • Specifying and creating methodological adjustments for the development of new products in the agronomic field

This position will require weekend on-call duty (twice a month) during the production campaign (March to June).
This role will involve business trips (4 times a year abroad) and as such you must be able to travel accordingly.
Required skills
As the successful candidate, you will be able to demonstrate some of the following skills and experience:

  • Engineering degree or equivalent, or Doctor, in Agronomy or Earth Sciences
  • An initial experience or an internship in satellite/remote sensing image processing or as an agricultural engineer,
  • knowledge of geographic image processing software (ENVI, ERDAS, etc.),
  • Skills in reflectance models (natural cover) would be a plus,
  • Ability to work within a team,
  • Independent approach and ability to propose solutions,
  • An advanced level of English and French.
